Giorgi instructed us to meet him on the launch deck but to be careful because the night watchman prowled at 30 minute intervals, at least in theory. He told me that he’d signal us once the guy had left the lower level because he wouldn’t likely make another round for a couple hours. Apparently the security guard took a smoke break on the upper prow that lasted nearly 45 minutes every night. I didn’t ask how Giorgi knew all this because I was too busy congratulating myself on my euros well spent. The skipper was worth every cent.

Peaches and I hastily donned our darkest clothes, which in my case consisted of black leggings and the rasher shirt I’d hope to use for diving. She went for nightshade purple stretch everything. Soon we were prowling down the hall towards the central stairs like a pair of bizarre action heroes until Peaches came to a sudden halt just before the stairs.

“Damn! I forgot the CCT cameras.” She was pointing to a security camera positioned by the central stairs.

“Can’t be helped.” I gazed at the round glass eye that appeared to be motion activated while remaining safely out of its sightline. I took aim with my phone fully intending to zap the camera but she stayed my hand.

“Wait. That could set off the alarm,” she whispered. “Instead, we’ll navigate the blind spots.” She snatched a handful of brochures sitting on a nearby table and threw them towards the stairs, causing the camera to swivel in that direction. “Follow me.” Which I did, sliding along the wall until we reached the next level and could scuttle down towards the launch deck avoiding electronic scrutiny where necessary.

We arrived on the lower deck to find Giorgi bent over the railing. He had already jammed something between the camera and the wall to keep all surveillance focused on a life raft far to the right. Turning, he beckoned us towards him. “Help me get boat over the side.” He pointed to a black four-seater inflatable leaning against another lifeboat and the three of us soon had the thing lowered to the water using the ropes provided.

I gazed down at the rocking boat.

“Okay, so how do we get down there?” I whispered.

Giorgi, who was busy dropping two sets of paddles into the boat, one by one, turned and grinned. “Rope ladder, see?”

No, I hadn’t seen but once I had, I wasted no time getting up and over the railing to begin the ten-foot climb down to the boat. At the bottom, it took a few moments to secure the inflatable as it was tethered only by the rope and bucked in the swells like an obstinate horse but I soon had it steadied against the ladder. Once the other two had climbed in, Giorgi unhooked the tether, we picked up the paddles, and started paddling.

“No lights,” I cautioned. ”Head around the tip of the island away from the archaeological area. That’s the direction we saw the boat heading,” I told Giorgi.
